BOTOX® Cosmetic is a common anti-aging treatment that blocks the nerve impulses that create the muscle contractions responsible for creating expression lines on the face. Treatment with botulinum type A (Botox) can relax the muscles that cause expression lines, thereby preventing wrinkles from forming and improving the appearance of existing wrinkles caused by facial expressions. Botulinum type A can be used in a treatment called “facial shaping” to help improve asymmetry or other facial conditions that result from muscle action.

Botulinum type A can also be used to treat a condition called hyperhidrosis (excessive perspiration). Ophthalmologists were the first doctors to perform and perfect BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, since BOTOX® was first invented to treat Amblyopia or Lazy Eye.

The FDA approved DysportTM to treat forehead wrinkles and frown lines, making it only the second drug to be approved by the agency as a wrinkle treatment. Dysport (formerly known as Reloxin) is made from the same active ingredient as Botox (made by Allergan), Clostridium botulism toxin type A. Botulinum toxins temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles by restricting the muscle actions that cause creasing and frown lines.

Like Botox, Dysport is administered via an injection at the site of the wrinkles. The FDA based its approval on clinical trials involving about 2,900 people at 80 study sites.

One clinical trial showed 93%-95% of participants noticed an improvement in the appearance of forehead wrinkles within three to seven days after treatment, and multiple treatments produced effects that lasted for more than 13 months. Its uses are similar to Botox, with similar effects and side effects
